Do I need to speak fluent English?

A basic level of English understanding is required in order to volunteer with LHA. As our hostels are busy communal environments, there are important health and safety procedures that cannot be overlooked, and volunteers must be able to understand essential instructions, guidance, and emergency information where needed.

We are proud to have both volunteers and staff members from many different backgrounds who speak a variety of languages, which often helps create a supportive and welcoming environment. However, having a basic understanding of English is important to ensure effective communication with staff, residents, and guests, particularly in situations involving safety, emergencies, or day-to-day volunteering duties.
