How busy or stressful are the Reception Support and Night Porter Support roles?

The experience can vary depending on the hostel, the time of year, and occupancy levels, but both roles are designed to support staff rather than place volunteers under excessive pressure.

Night Porter Support roles tend to be the quieter of the two. As hostels are generally less active during overnight hours, typically between approximately 23:00 and 07:00, there are often fewer guest interactions and arrivals. Volunteers may assist with tasks such as light cleaning of public areas, basic housekeeping duties, small maintenance-related checks, preparing areas for the following day, and helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment overnight. While unexpected situations can occasionally arise, these roles are generally calm and structured.

Reception Support roles can be busier, particularly during peak periods such as check-in and check-out times, guest arrivals and departures, and during periods of high occupancy. Volunteers may assist with welcoming guests, answering basic enquiries, supporting administrative tasks, and helping maintain organised reception areas.

Regardless of the role, volunteers are never expected to manage situations beyond their level of comfort. There will always be a member of staff available to provide guidance and support, and volunteers should refer any issues, concerns, complaints, or situations requiring staff intervention directly to a team member.

While some days may naturally be busier than others, most volunteers find these roles rewarding opportunities to develop confidence, communication skills, customer service experience, and an understanding of how a busy hostel operates.
