How is volunteering at LHA different from voluntary work?

Volunteering at LHA is strictly volunteering, not voluntary work. This means that LHA volunteers offer their time and skills freely and without pay, and there is no contract or legal obligation between the volunteer and LHA. Volunteers are there to support staff, for example helping with check-ins, housekeeping, or meal service, and their role is based on goodwill.

In contrast, voluntary work usually involves a contractual agreement, meaning the individual is expected to carry out work and the organisation must provide it. Because of this, voluntary workers may be entitled to certain rights and benefits, such as rest breaks, holiday, or allowances, similar to employees.

At LHA, even when accommodation is provided, it is only to support the volunteer in carrying out their role and does not change their status into a worker. In short: LHA volunteering is informal, unpaid, and without legal obligations, while voluntary work is more structured, contractual, and comes with legal rights.
