What happens if I am unwell or need some time away from volunteering?
We understand that life can be unpredictable and that there may be times when you become unwell or need time away from volunteering due to personal circumstances, travel plans, studies, work commitments, family matters, appointments, or other unforeseen situations.
If this happens, we simply ask that you let the hostel team know as soon as possible and provide as much notice as you can. Keeping us informed helps us plan ahead, support you appropriately, and ensure that volunteering duties can be covered where needed.
Ideally, you should inform a member of staff in person at reception, as this is often the quickest way for the team to become aware of the situation. If this is not possible, you can also contact the hostel by phone, message, or email.
Our first priority will always be to understand your situation and work with you to find a practical solution wherever possible. We recognise that circumstances can change, and we aim to be supportive and flexible when they do.
Where possible, please let us know how long you expect to be absent and provide updates if your circumstances change. Where operationally feasible, we will do our best to accommodate requests for time away. In situations where multiple volunteers are already absent or where covering duties may be particularly challenging, staff may suggest alternative arrangements, such as adjusting days off duty or arranging a duty swap where appropriate.
If we have not received an update for some time, a member of staff may check in with you to see how you are doing and discuss any expected return date.
In most cases, short periods of absence can be accommodated without issue. However, if an absence becomes prolonged and extends beyond our ability to reasonably hold the volunteering opportunity open, it may unfortunately result in the volunteering agreement coming to an end. Any such situation would always be considered carefully and discussed with the volunteer wherever possible.
The most important thing is communication. If we know what is happening, we are usually in a much better position to support you and explore the options available.
