What if I don't get along with my roommates?
Living with other people can sometimes bring challenges, particularly when individuals have different personalities, habits, routines, or expectations. In most situations, we encourage volunteers to address concerns directly, respectfully, and constructively with their roommates first.
It is also worth noting that many volunteers tell us that sharing accommodation became one of the most rewarding parts of their volunteering experience. We frequently hear from volunteers that they have formed lasting friendships, learned about different cultures, and gained valuable life skills through shared living. This is especially true for those who have never shared a room before, as it can be a unique opportunity to develop communication, understanding, and adaptability.
Open communication, setting reasonable boundaries, and approaching discussions with mutual respect often helps resolve issues before they become larger problems. As adults sharing a living space, volunteers are expected to play an active role in maintaining a positive and respectful environment.
If difficulties continue, staff are available to provide support and guidance. We may be able to help facilitate a conversation, better understand the concerns involved, and explore possible solutions. In some circumstances, and where accommodation availability allows, a room move or relocation may be considered.
While we will always do our best to support everyone involved, successful shared living ultimately relies on cooperation, communication, compromise, and mutual respect from all parties. We encourage volunteers to approach room sharing with an open mind, as many discover that what initially feels unfamiliar becomes one of the most memorable and positive aspects of their time at LHA.
