What is the social atmosphere like at the hostels? (quiet, lively, or somewhere in between?) Are there organized events or activities?

The social atmosphere can vary from hostel to hostel, which is one of the things that makes each LHA property unique. Some hostels tend to be quieter and more relaxed, while others have very active social communities with volunteers, residents, and staff regularly organising events and activities.

Throughout the year, hostels may host a variety of social events such as Christmas celebrations, Halloween activities, game or movie nights, cooking sessions, fun competitions, communal meals, cultural events, and trips to explore London and its many attractions. Some hostels naturally develop a particularly social atmosphere, while others may appeal more to those who prefer a quieter environment.

Generally speaking, there is usually something for everyone. Whether you enjoy meeting new people and joining activities or prefer a more independent experience, most volunteers find a balance that suits them.

It is also worth remembering that every person's experience is different. While feedback from current and former volunteers can be helpful, nothing truly replaces experiencing the hostel community for yourself. We therefore encourage volunteers to spend some time getting to know the people, routines, and atmosphere of their chosen hostel before deciding whether it is the right fit for them. Many volunteers find that the social side of volunteering becomes one of the most rewarding and memorable parts of their stay.
